Canizares - missed the last World Cup.

Position: Goalkeeper
Born: 18.12.69
Club: Valencia

Santiago Canizares will feel he has some unfinished business in the World Cup having missed the 2002 Finals in the most unfortunate of circumstances.

The Valencia keeper severed a tendon in his right foot after he accidentally smashed a bottle of aftershave and a shard of glass penetrated his flesh.

The injury could not have come at a worse time for Canizares as he was to enter the tournament as Spain's No 1 having fought off Iker Casillas.

The Real Madrid man is firmly ensconced in the starting line-up now, though, and Canizares again had to be content with bench-warming in qualifying.

Yet at 36, he remains a goalkeeper of the highest quality with something left in the tank despite having made his international debut some 13 years ago.

A product of the Real Madrid academy, Canizares had to move to Celta Vigo to find first-team football but was back at the Bernabeu within two years before joining Valencia, where he has won plenty of silverware.

This summer represents the perfect opportunity to put his World Cup heartache behind him, but Casillas will have something to say about that.
